Quilts of Valor – #2 Vietnam Vets Commemoration

by Jenna Farquhar

Laura was able to speak to top leaders and prominent members of the community about Quilts of Valor (QOV) and the work done by the Quilters with a Heart group. The Quilters with a Heart come together once a month to work on Quilts of Valor projects to be awarded to those touched by war. This year, with the support of the cities, they will be commemorating Vietnam veterans. Laura was also able to distribute brochures and other information about Quilts of Valor as well as schedule two more speaking engagements to spread program awareness.

In response to her presentation, Laura received several questions. The main one was, “Why haven’t we heard about this organization before?” Laura doesn’t know, but is working to help spread awareness about the program, both for support and to be able to cover everyone in central Texas who is touched by war with Quilts of Valor. A quilt will soon be on display at the Bell County Museum in Belton.

Once more people know about the Quilt of Valor program, the next step is to obtain quilts for presentations. The Quilts with a Heart group is growing but has more requests than the members can fill. The first big group presentation to award quilts will be at the Marathon for Vietnam Vets on March 1st.
