“Trash to Treasure”

One of the things I receive are a lot of unfinished quilt tops and pieces from loved ones that don't know what to do with them after a loved one has passed. It gives me great pleasure to save these treasures. I have also found quilt tops in the trash or about to be taken to the trash and have rescued them and finish them as I can. Next year I will be having some of these treasures in our local quilt show for family members to come and see their loved ones quilts completed. Most of the time I don't receive such treasures but I still go when I get the call because every once in a great while when...

STRESS SPELLED BACKWARDS IS DESSERTS?

It is stressful to be an entrepreneur, to build a business from your living room into a brick and mortar that is separate from your home. To be honest it is stressful just to get up in the morning and go out and live weather you have your own business, work for someone else or are retired. Life is full of stress!  The new location for Quality Quilts is on our property behind our home but it is still separate.  I was not aware that this would make such a difference to those out in the business community but it has, in a good and positive way. The stress is always there but that is not always a negative...

AND WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

What a weekend! Went to the local quilt show to have a look at Siren Song and found out she won 3 ribbons. One was best computerized quilting. The painter was here and painted the kitchen and dinning room. The last of the odds and ends are at the new storage site waiting for when we can build a storage shed on our property. Now to put up the artwork on the walls and putting  up the books that remain in what will be the hubbies wood working shop. Even the decks are being cleaned and the additional decking around and leading to "Quiltopia" have begun to be built by the hubby. We are seeing the light...

Moving Forward!

What a week! The contractors finished up on Friday. They did a fantastic job!!! I just can't believe they are done and how beautiful it all looks. Now for the deck and some landscaping. Tim and I have already began buying and putting together new shelving, cutting tables and storage. While the contractors were finishing up I was busy cleaning all the shelving and containers that have been outside and in storage. I did manage to get a few thing set up in the storage room.

CONSTRUCTION, HELPING OTHERS , and QUILTING…..OH MY!

So much going on here at my new studio "Quiltopia" Part of the exterior has been painted. The bamboo flooring is installed and we have the light fixtures up. The interior is all textured and painted a bright white. This is really happening!!!! Oh yea the new windows arrived and will be installed next week.       Quilts of Valor have taken a back seat to customer jobs but this week we worked on binding and labeling four so we can award them and ship two to be awarded next week to those that are returning home from another of many deployments.     After...

It Begins!

The tree trimmers and landscapers have been here and a lot of brush was cleared from around the new studio. Three large truck loads of leaves went to the dump and the grapes and herbs have been planted. There is more landscaping to be done and of course decking to be built once the building if finished. Flooring, windows, lighting and decking materials have been ordered and are waiting to be delivered when the contractor is ready. The building is empty and construction has begun. It is unbelievable the changes in just two short days. I am mapping out where everything will go when we get to set the studio...

Thanking our Heroes!

One of the most rewarding things I do as a quilter is my work with Quilts of Valor. Last year I had children decorate and print messages on six and a half inch of muslin with crayons and markers for future Quilts of Valor.  I write some of words on a portable dry erase board such as Thank you, hero, etc... so the children will spell their message correctly. Also so I don't have to spell the same word dozens of times throughout the event.  I also tell them that  they can't have guns or blood in their pictures because some of our soldiers and people who were soldiers don't want to see that on their...

It’s cool to be square!

One of the most difficult things for me as a quilter is keeping the quilt square. I have found that one of the easiest ways to make/keep a quilt square is to use my channel locks and pin the quilt top to the perfectly stitched horizontal and vertical sew lines. Now you may think you should not  have to pin when using a longarm quilting machine, isn't that one of the reasons you bought the machine? I know it was for me, but alas I have learned that to make my quilts square and those rows straight I MUST pin! Now if the quilt is not for show and won't be hung and going to be used and abused I tend...

Will It Never End?

It has been a rough couple of weeks here at Quality Quilts with illness and still working on emptying what was once a storage building/workshop so it can be transformed into the new studio for Quality Quilts. Twenty years of stuff and all the wood working equipment is proving to be a very big job and you throw into the mix the desire to have a summer garden and illness and you have a perfect storm. As you can see more has come into the house. I didn't think we could get another thing in but we did! You see we can't have anything in the attic of the shop due to the insulation of  new  lighting...

First Things First!

The first thing one must do when building a new business location is ensure it is safe for clients and guest to get to. Walking on a slopping backyard that is nothing but dirt and rocks will not work! We have large trees that we love but keep out the sun and keeps any and all grass from growing. Trees have been trimmed a lot, we will see if we can grow anything back there this summer. So we had two retaining walls built and have filled in and given them almost two years to settle. The walls are holding up great and there are no signs of shifting. There will be a large deck off the studio...
